An Economic History of the World in 4 Minutes

In this BBC video Hans Rosling tells the story of the economic history of 200 countries over the last 200 years in four minutes! Plotting life expectancy against income for every country since 1810, Rosling uses cutting edge visuals to show how the world could be radically different from what many of us imagine. Hyperobjects indeed.

Without such tools our species will remain naïve and haphazard in our responses to an increasingly precarious planetary situation.

I mostly focused on the blue dots. Those are people who are linked to me. It's funny, meaning oddly ironic, that although I live in one of the countries identified by the euro-dots, my body and access to wealth and power in some ways tells a slowly rising, moving blue tale. Thanks for this.

I understand. I became immediately aware of the underlining 'blue story' while watching as well. In fact I knew even before he pointed out Ghana that blue was representing Africa.

The next step for that kind of visualization project should be to show linkages, lines of contact and flows of resources moving between dots, demonstrating the actual relationships between populations, growth and movement up the ladder.

What a crazy visual that would be from even an aesthetic point of view. Psychedelic health stats!
