Any System

ANY SYSTEM
by Leonard Cohen

Any system you contrive without us
will be brought down
We warned you before
and nothing that you built has stood
Hear it as you lean over your blueprint
Hear it as you roll up your sleeve
Hear it once again
Any system you contrive without us
will be brought down

You have your drugs
You have your guns
You have your Pyramids your Pentagons
With all your grass and bullets
you cannot hunt us any more
All that we disclose of ourselves forever
is this warning
Nothing that you built has stood
Any system you contrive without us
will be brought down.

Michael, love this poem. I'm a big fan of Leonard Cohen, but hadn't seen this one. Brilliant.

Just wanted to finally drop in and say that I come here almost daily and I love this site. I admire your combination of philosophical intelligence, (r)evolutionary passion, and emboldened sense of justice. I always feel a kindred spirit here, and appreciate the resources you bring to my attention.

Keep up the great work, it's certainly an interesting time in history, and it's going to take the concerted effort of many to move through and beyond this turbulent time. Thanks again for the poem, that made my day. peace, in solidarity, trevor.

@Trevor

Wow, thanks man. It's fantastic that you finally said hello! I greatly appreciate you encouragement and support. I truly love blogging, especially sharing the things I find in my relentless internet researches. I hope now that we are acquainted you’ll feel free to chime in whenever about whatever, because I learn/grow so much more from conversations than I do just grinding out my own opinions.

The only way we are gonna make it through the next 20 years is together, and I feel grateful knowing people such as yourself are out there.

@Staci

Cohen is great, and this poem is one of his greatest. I’m proud to say I have a first printing of The Energy of Slaves on my shelf.

Although I’m not much for celebrity worship, I think he’s quite the personality. One of my academic mentors (a specialist in Hindu goddesses) is really good friends with Cohen and has some truly mindblowing stories to tell about the time they spent together in a Zen monastery in the 90s.

Thanks for dropping in!
